Installing Windows 7 on an Optiplex SX270

1. Load and install a normal installation of Windows 7 onto the computer.

2. Once installed go to Internet Explorer and go here:

Intel 82865G Graphics Controller

3. Download the driver and make sure to save, NOT run.

4. Locate your driver, right click on it, and click properties.

5. Go to the compatibility tab and check the box that says: Run this setup in compatibility mode.

6. Click on the drop-box and select Windows XP ( Service Pack 3 )

7. Click OK and run the installer.

8. Go through the steps of installing it and when asked restart your computer.

9. Be welcomed to your now native resolution system!

Test Machines.

Today we put up three Test machines. Myself Frost and Muchies worked on 'em in the morning then later on in the afternoon Tanner and Amanda came and and helped. It didn't take to long to get all of it done. We had to Zap 'em all and of course reformat. Then we got XP CD(s) and started installation. The only thing that really got in our way was if we didn't use a certain CD then it wouldn't work with the code on the side of the SX270's. That puzzled us for a little while, so we just waited for the one disk that we knew for a fact worked to go through all three machines. Once xp was installed the rest was pretty much cake, there was a tumb drive with all the drivers on it, so all we had to do was plug that in and grab the Sound/Ethernet/Graphic...etc... Then we could see the Tera station and grab Service pack 2 and Service pack 3 and open office. From there all that was left was to configure the printer and to so the little windows updated that we had to do. Once that was finished then the machine was done.

Each student will be given 2 Dell Optiplex 270s and a second NIC card for each machine, you may use any operating system you like and any add on product as long as it's free or available as a trial. The test will be to boot a second machine and obtain the TCP/IP settings from your server. The client must receive an IP address between 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.255
The final day of the project is May 30th, grades are 100 points for the first team to demonstrate success, 90 points for the second team and 80 points for the third. Team Captains are Amanda, Tanner and Jimmy. Each team must declare their OS of choice by commenting to this post TODAY. Daily progress reports from each team in the form of comments to this post must be posted daily in order to receive credit.

Amazon.com sells Microsoft office student edition for $97.00, the standard (non-educational) version sells for $314.00.
On the other hand open office can be downloaded for free from openoffice.org, open office is compatible with both windows and linux operating systems.
Open office claims to do everything Microsoft Office can do and claims to give you more bang for the buck. On the other hand even if it's free, the open office product is different. Most of us have been using the Microsoft Product for years and dealing buttons being in different places and commands not working exactly the same isn't worth the hassle.

Windows XP costs money, Ubuntu is free which is a big deal if your busted, but if your in the market for a new machine is the hundred bucks or so that you pay for XP really a deal breaker?

Today's new XP machines also have an added twist in that they come with trial versions of application software. This further reduces the actual cost of the OS to the buyer, software company's pay vendors money to include their trial versions of software on new machines thus lowering the cost of new machines, some have estimated the purchases price of a new machines could include as little as $50.00 for the Windows OS. Not bad when you consider Windows XP and now Vista are compatible with nearly every title of application software on the planet. Come on admit it, compatibility with apps is everything.

As for me, I like the idea of free and open source software like Ubuntu but in the real world time is money and the money spent on XP or Vista is a drop in the bucket compared to the hours and hours one is likely to spend beating his head against the wall trying to get Ubuntu to do what Windows OS's have been doing for years, getting work done.

The Problem (and Solution) to AVG

THE PROBLEM: Combined with Internet Explorer 7, AVG 8.0 slows down browsing through the proxy server to a agonizing crawl.

THE SOLUTION: In the AVG config, disable the component LinkScanner. This will solve the problem, and bring browsing back to full speed.

Ubuntu ltsp server version 8.04 review
this server is a very useful tool other than the fact that it will screw up your admin privileges in under a day (i do not know why this is) it comes with open office. this version of Ubuntu server is not worth the time due to the fact that the root passwords and admin privileges are bugged up after the first use. i have not found any way to revers this (mister hunt said,"just write the review and scrap it :D").

this server is a dhcp server (meaning: you can PXE boot machines off of this server) which allows you to make other computers run without having hard drives or Os's. in order to boot off of this you are required to have a nic ram video card and 2 Ethernet cables one going from the machine to the switch the other going from the switch to the the 2nd nic in the server.

i do not recommend this server to anyone who doesn't have allot of patients because there are a lot of bugs in it in my opinion. one for instance is the fact that if you don't have to http proxy typed in exactly correct then you have to reboot and start over the installation. another bug is again the root password and the admin privileges getting denied from the user on the root account

Windows 2003 Home server Down's and Up's

1.Windows 2003 server. Costs a lot more than compared to ubuntu.
2.Ubuntu costing nothing, is in my opinion easier to setup internet and make it a proxy quicker.
3.Windows 2003 home server, is soley for local are networks only.
4.You can't run any games on it, or run anything thats fun, plus it doesn't come with games????

5.But windows server is an excellent local server if you want to keep like five or six locally connected computers together and under monitor.
6.manufactured before ubuntu, it doesn't have as much applications as ubuntu.
7.on this OS you can back up hard drives from local clients, same with squid or Hardy Heron.
8.This OS has a search icon on the desktop. Just as ubuntu.

Xubuntu Review

While slightly less system hogging then full blown Ubuntu, the price is the smooth looks and nice appeal of Ubuntu. Everything in Xubuntu is hard looking and basically screaming with "Office Use."

Though even in that respect it will fail if you use it straight from the install, as it is missing some crucial software in the one respect it would be useful with. officer Software. Xubuntu comes with the basic Abiword word editor and a basic spreadsheet program. in the efforts to save space and system drain, as was Xubuntu's intent, they left out the crucial programs of Open Office.

In the respects of system drain, it does fairly well. On a GX100 the lag is much less noticeable than with normal Ubuntu, but its still there. While it would probably load some things faster than a traditional Windows OS, it just doesn't have the appeal.

As stated, this is a pure no-nonsense OS and made for the bare minimum. Im sure a starting business, or people with not enough Pirating skills to get a copy of XP, will find this a useful OS.

In conclusion, if you've got a crappy machine, Xubuntu will get the basics done,with no fluff, no shine, and no appeal.

(Side Note, Abiword sucks at Typing, as it highlights A LOT of sentences while offering no solutions, leading to the general confusion of whoever is using it.)

when i first got this printer I was stumped on what to do. Mr. hunt said I had to reconfigure the thing back to factory settings. It proved out being easier than what I made it to be. It was this little button on the back of the printer that would reset everything if you held it for 15 seconds.
Once I got it back to factory settings it took about five minutes to change the ip and print out a test page from Mr. Hunts ubuntu computer. Soon most of the other computers should be configured to be able to print from this printer I think.

P 7 IT-03 Current Project List as of 5-4-08 ALL projects should be documented step by step and procedures should be posted to the blog using Picasa as a tool to upload pictures.

Ryan, Evan, Phrosty and Tanner are working on proxy servers with cache configured properly. This is a competition, Ryan and Tanner are a team and using Ubuntu with Squid. Evan and Phrosty are using an XP box.
James and sometimes Andrew need to get the network printers working. The printer should be assigned an IP address, from there XP boxes should be able to print directly to it. The obstacle at this point is finding out about a reset switch on the network interface. The next steps is to find the online documentation for this product. Once the procedure is tested and understood a posting to the blog including pictures is in order.
Amanda is the lead on this project. Jimmy sometimes works with Amanda on this project. Getting the back corner squared away so IT-03 can move setup semi-permanent homes on desks and loose the carts. All three cadets should be helping with this project whenever possible. The "stuff" on unused carts is to be boxed and stored.
Room 144 remove and replace project Tanner is the lead on this project, the project involves the removal and replacement of both tables and computers in room 144. Resources are the tables in room 148 and theGX270 towers in room 40.
Metal Shop Computer lab remove and replace project: Evan is the lead on this project. All of the machine's BIOS's are ready to go...now the only thing to do is to drop images on the machines and get them registered with the tech department.
Ubuntu LTSP pxe boot project. We have the Ubuntu server disk and we need to load the OS on Big Mac. According to this document it's just a matter of having two nics and hitting F4 at the right time. A good blog on the subject can be found here.
Jimmy is working on getting a Gateway E3400 up and running.
Brandon is getting a dual boot Gateway E4000 with wireless delivered to Mr. Peters room by Friday.

By now all machines should have XP loaded on 50% of the drive and the device manager in XP should be clear.

Open office should be loaded as well as acrobat reader (for reading PDF files)
Picasa should be loaded (if the xp version is not on the terastation just follow this link and download and install it from the net).
Go to bored.com and try to play a game, this will tell you if you have "flash player" loaded correctly. If flash is not working go to Adobe.com and install it, then retest.
Ubuntu 8.04 should be installed on the second 50% of your drive. By default open office is already installed.
The goal is to make sure you can open a pdf, play a flash game (like bored.com), manage photo's with Picasa, print to both the laser and the color printer, run open office, play mp3 music files, and watch a DVD movie (we have external DVD drives) on BOTH the XP and Ubuntu builds.
Once that is complete you need to backup your hard drive using ghost saving your image to an external drive. You then need simulate a system crash by deleting all of the files on your hard drive, then restore the system to it's original state again using ghost.

I've loaded Ubuntu Hardy Heron on a few machines downstairs and the updates have taken hours. Now the official release is available so I took the time to download the ISO and create a new CD. With the new CD it loaded on my GX270 in 25 minutes and the best news of all NO UPDATES! Let me see you beat that on an XP box!

ISO's on the CDBurning machine and on the terastation need to have all copies of 7.10 deleted and replaced with 8.04 the hardy heron. NICE!

Proxy on XP?

I just did some research on the possibily of an XP client machine being a proxy server. I found TONS or different downloads, i downloaded one called CCProxy, installed it and messed with it a bit, and i think that this will be a lot easier than XUbuntu.

Last day in IT-03

so today is the last day of period 7 IT-03 next term it will be 6th lame.
anyways the final is supposed to be done today, hmmm yeah about that I hit a bump when i got to the making cache part which now I know I don't have to do so hopefully today when I'm in class i can get past that quick enough to atleast get somewhere near this, I think personally that this shoud carry on into the next term, and we not have a final. I mean yeah people are close but is 45 minutes really enough for some people to even start in the access control area? like evan his squid isn't even working at the moment honestly mr. hunt if you read this you should consider taking this into next term plx.

also i would like to add tanner is right, yesterday in IT-03 everyone (except evan -_-) couldn't get Xubuntu to connect with the server our IP adressess were right but for some reason no matter what we did there was still no connection, could this mean that xubuntu fails or just the kids in IT-03??? who knows put a bunch of nerds in a room with computers and you have what we have although it is funny when you think about it all these nerd and no one can figure something out like a connection to the server from Xubuntu. anyways im rambling.

Xubuntu Confusion

Ok, it-03 final is RAWR O_o but ya anyways so yestarday evan was the only one able to connect to the proxy server with his xubuntu machine eve people that were connected before were having troubles with it. I copied all of evans settings both under firefox's connection settings and under the computers settings itself the only difference i found was that his connection was called eth0 when mine was eth1 so ya, ranting maybe but really i could use some help

Xubuntu on a GX100

This will be an interesting test. I have a lot of work to do today, lots of reading and writing. I have a couple of term papers due on Tuedsay. My test is to try to do it all of my work on this little Gx100 running Xubuntu. Just in case I get into trouble I have my very fast windows XP machine close at hand.
I've loaded the GX100 with Xubuntu 6.06, received my 134 updates, then installed XMMX and flash player. That's all I intend to do to this machine. XMMS is a very small winamp look a like that lets me listen to Internet radio when I go to shoutcast.com an absolute must.
I have a little USB extension cable that runs from the back of the machine to the front so I don't have to break my neck every time I want to plug in a thumb drive. I also have a most excellent set of Panasonic headphones.
I think it's absolutly amazing that ANYTHING runs on a 433mhz celeron processor with 256megs of ram.

Some of you may, or may not, play the online killer game known as Guild Wars. If you don't, click the link and go look it up. If you do, then you know its pretty friendly to older machines, but still looks nice. So, I am installing GW: Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall on my Dell Inspiron 7500 to see if it will play it with zero to minimal lag. Without a Mouse ill probably be stuck on Administrative duty in my guild when im on the Laptop, but it's a good test of the machine.

I can see you guys have been awefully busy on the blog since i have been gone *sarcasm* haha but low and behold believe it or not i havent done anything worth commenting either! Although completely un-related to anything techie i have succesfully found a free private lineage 1 server, ive looked far and wide and could only find lineage 2 servers which is a little to pretty for my machine, plus i just like lineage 1 a whole lot better. It kind of has a diablo 2 look but a lot more emphasis on leveling, unlike diablo -_-, also rates are a little boosted so you wont have to spend a lifetime to enjoy the game, anyways if anyone is interested the website is game-masters.org although there have been some ?ddos? basically a brute force program attack on the website so the connect to webpage and all that aren't exactly all there but i have all the files you would need if you would like to join me ^_^, don't get discouraged by the korean text its a minor detail to deal with, were using the korean client because it has all the new stuff which the american client does not, and he is working on translations so =D, anyways pointless post mr hunt angry, im not sick anymore, little bit bored,

Changing the IP Adress On The Terastation.

A walk through of changing the IP was not asked of me, however i figured Mr. Hunt would probably ask me sooner or later so I thought I should get it out of the way ^^ (Yea I'm that bored >.<) So here we go....

First, you will need a machine, I would suggest a XP machine just because it seems to be the most familar to most people. What you will need to do is plug it into your machine via Ethernet cord. You can do so by either a directs connection, or through a switch. Once you have it all connected, i think the obvious thing to do is to turn the Tera station on. When you are at your desktop, open your internet browser, in your URL type in the IP address of the Tera station, if you do not know what this is, then just watch the screen on the Tera station, it will show up eventually. Once you enter that, a window will pop up. It will ask you for the user and password, If you happen to need the user and pass for the Tera station at school, find me(although you should never need in there(Per 7 different story maybe)) Once you are in there the There is a nav bar on the left, the rest is really self explaining.

so the whole moodle thing with wideman and I is ok we had alittle set back with the whole webmin lawls.
Since Tanner had me download the wrong one mr hunt downloaded the right one for us.
wideman installed it on the moodle machine which im thinking is either a 260 or 270 and from there we already had apache installed im not quite sure what to do know though...where exactly do we find the moodle files?

GX-Mandriva and a Noisy P4

Okay, last week I set up Mandriva on one of the GX100's downstairs. It runs pretty well from what I've seen, and there's not a huge decrease in performance after turning on the Compiz 3D effects. I have noticed that screen artifacts show up when using the effects, though.

In other news, I took a Gateway E3600 home on Friday, got Mandriva set up on it, and I have it hooked up to a KDM switch for convenience. Other than some basic configuration, most of what I've done with it has just been testing out the various Compiz effects. Thus far I haven't been able to get the water effects to work, but Jacob has made me think that a reinstall might fix this. Unfortunately, one of the fans in the machine makes some noise while it's running.

So I see here that jake has finally got ubuntu installing, now is the perfect time to tell him that he should not install ubuntu, he should definately wipe his drive and start over! Why do I say this you ask? Well from what i get from his posts he was loaned a laptop from downstairs to use as a test machine at home. I'm not sure of how well these things run exactly but i know if service pack 2 bogs them down even just a little there not exactly top of the line, and granted that ubuntu really isnt a resource hog all in itself because its runs on those gx100's downstairs it i am guessing still wont run very well on the laptop for i dont even have optimal speed on the gx260 i took home, so i propse to jake to once again start over with xubuntu. I have yet to run this but mr hunt was saying that he saw people talking about running xubuntu bieng on the internet with as little as 64mb of ram. how is that for a resource hog? Laptop (Un)Woes

After some crazy researching, a little bit of Code editing on the Boot
line for 7.10's live disc, and a butt load of Finger crossing, Ive
somehow got 7.10 to start installing. Its 26% along the "Installing
system" part and its travelling at a snails pace, but the sites I
looked at said this was because of Live Disc. So, hopefully When It
gets installed Ill be witness to a gloriously fast Linux OS.

If your curious why I took off XP, After installing SP2 I found out
the it turned my XP into a Resource hog and made it nearly unbarable
to use. Im hoping this works otherwise Im going to have to find a new
option.
(And if your reading this Limewire, your Mandriva Disc Crashed and
Burned only minutes into the installer, and trust me, I researched on
it too.)

bit rough around the edges but at least i can get some blasted updates

Wow, when I screw up, I screw up Big!

I have the laptop home for all of 4 hours, messing with the
background, testing things like Amarok and my iPod, and I notice that
my User name was still student and my password was...Password.
So I thought, "This will be a breeze to change"
Sure, it was easy, but then It also accidentally changed where it
looked for my Home Folder. Yea, that was another 4 hours of
researching possible fixes, way to get in past the login screen, etc.
Eventually I decided it would be easier to just re-install Ubuntu off
the 7.10 disc I got from Mr.hunt. WRONG.
Turns out, 7.10 and ATI-graphics cards don't get along at the "Saving
Vesa State" point in Installation. This apparently was only a problem
in 7.10, and not in 7.4.
Curse my Luck. So In order to not have a useless pile of laptop for
the whole weekend I decided to put my XP-Home CD on the laptop, and
For a change, the dice went my way. It didn't even want a Product Key,
which is all the better.
Of course the part that just had to not work..was the Ethernet card.
It worked fine on Ubuntu and with Mr. Hunts Ethernet cable, but sure
enough it refuses to connect to my Home PC. I know its a good cable,
because I use it on my 360...
So Now, I'm taking my time to Download the Alternate Installation iso
of 7.10 and Ill burn it to a disc and see how it works. Its supposedly
able to disable the VESA State issue.

I'm pretty sure somebody up their hates me.

Well the snow days may not be over yet, it is supposed to snow tonight hopefully ice up the roads a little bit maybe get out of school another day or at least get us on another shortened schedule. And the rag server isnt really hard to manage i mean its up and going, but as for customs and amazing crazy addons...i just dont have the time to code all of it and its just ridiculous and maybe later when i have time but as i said anyone is invited to the files i currently have, although mantis card gives 10k strength o.o

Windows ME. FTW? Or not so much?

Well as many of you probably know I like to build ME machines their simple they work, just good to use all around. There has been all this talk that it's not safe and blah blah blah. Now for someone like myself who reinstalls windows every month, ME wouldn't be a problem for me, if i got a virus o well. Just a quick reinstall. Now for the other who actually keeps important files on their computer, ME probably isn't the best choice for them. Something that should be tested is...how safe is ME? I would basically like to try and get a virus or spy ware by just doing simple tasks such as:

1.) E-mail
2.) Myspace
3.) Blogs/forums
4.) D/Ling Pics from Google
5.) Searching Google for computer help.
6.) D/Ling music from (Limewire/iMesh etc...)

For the most part, these are general tasks for the average teen(maybe not all of them but you get the picture). If these tasks manages to get me a virus, spyware, etc... Then I would have to conclude that ME is unsafe for the user that has important files and will be surfing the internet. Now keep in mind that if you will not be using this machine for any kind of internet access and you basically just need a word processor and something to store your files on, then ME works great. It's printer friendly (For the most part) open office ((older version)) works great. I will post again once I have the results of my testing.

Not Enough Time

This is crazy, like seriously you have to do so many things just to put in like 1 custom npc. I find myself navigating through 4 different text files just to put it into the game. 1 to say WOAH theres a new npc, another to say the npc looks like this, another to tell the game what the npc says, and another to say ya there really is a new npc. A lot of copy and pasting from other peoples scripts lalala. Anyways so I kind of figured out the patcher although I have got one up yet. But i did make a new data.grf file that will include only new sprites of items, hairstyles etc. So patching for now will be fairly small. I got a stylist npc in and the new data.grf file includes like 251 hair colors but i cant figure out how to make the stylist allow them >_< and anyone without the grf will error as soon as you apply a hair color that comes in the custom grf, even if it doesnt show it. But we totally peaked at like 5 players!!! its amazing lawls. anyways so i do have people on just messing around.

So current progress
-New data.grf for small updates as soon as we get a patcher up
-Inserted a new npc so i learned something
-changed rates to 100,000 times the original or maybe 10,000 im not sure but its big so eh

Still Need
-Patcher so everyone can get the updated data.grf so they don't error
-Many npcs, but we know how to put them in so that should come easily
-Map editor, I found one but couldnt figure it out.
-Customs to differentiate ourselves from other servers

I noticed you said that you were bored fairly quickly on Anarchy after
having Ultimate power, etc etc.
The best cure, is to Expand your player base. In order to do that..
you'd have to publicize the server. Theirs probably several places,
forums, etc you can Say your running a Ragnarok server. It would give
you a real-world test of the server on whether it can run or not when
you have a lot of people playing.

(You might also put that Data for ragnarok {Patches, the actual game,
your client, etc} on the ISO computer in the Tech room. So that if
anyone wants to they can burn themselves a copy, or just put it on a
Flash Drive.)

And as I said before, you cant go wrong with good old Counter-Strike.

So both evan and adam connected to the server with no problem whatsoever last night, first try, it was amazing. We messed around for a little bit and they got bored or something =P. Now for the fine tuning i'm gonna need a

Patcher - for users to automatically get the updates I make to the game

Custom maps - BECAUSE THERE JUST ISNT ENOUGH! =P

Installer - for a quick easy way for people to get the game going and then they can use the patcher to update from there

MORE PEOPLE! - Well I didn't think it would strain it that much and I expected no other results but with 5 people connected to my home gx 260 pc there was no lag whatsoever so all is going smoothly just need to do a lot more research and get this to actually be entertaining instead of the monotonmous game everyone is used to palying

ok, its not customized what so ever! but its up, anyone who would like to hop on and play will have the full array of gm commands including making yourself max level and giving yourself whatever items you want. I'd really like to test a player/lag capacity and its stability as in how much crap can you people do before it gets mad on my side over loads and go's BEWM! I have all the files you need on my flash drive, its not tested but you should be able to just take those files and copy them right to your computer and you should be good, next step is to make an installer, get a patcher running and then host a website for it. I hope anyone who is interested will help ^_^

As to what jake was saying about hosting a teamspeak or ventrilo server on the server well, ventrilo probrably not, because i believe there is a monthly fee which comes with that, although im pretty sure that teamspeak is free but much less organized and i prefer ventrilo but hey I could prolly get a TS server up and going for technical support on the server or something. But I believe the power of the server is pretty lame considering it was collecting dust in the corner of the tech room. and as far as i get on the server it says something like 500mHz proccesor because I have yet figured out how to load anything on that stupid thing. So for right now im hosting the server off of the gx 260 i took home. I'm still trying to get something loaded on the server at home but it is so FRUSTERING. But I'll make it happen

Server Suggestion

Assuming your server has the processing power, you might think of
running multiple things on it. Could be as simple as a CS server and
Ragnarok, or Team Speak/Ventrillo. Assuming you can do such
multi-tasking on that server of course.
It'd be interesting to see, after you've tested it a few times and got
the kinks worked out, if Computers from school on the Open connection
could connect to your server and Play. And If that works, it would
open up multitudes of paths for other things, such as a Mail server,
etc etc.

Router troubles and Raggy complications

Ok, so my mom freaked outon me yestarday for not having internet, for some reaosn it was down. She thought it was my fault because I had been messing in the router settings to apply the port forwarding settings to allow people to connect to my ragnarok server. So after a small freak out by her she made me go "fix it" well there was nothing to fix but trying to humor her i played with some stuff and prolly screwed up my router, None of my router or modem settings were bad, it was verizon! they lost internet in our area, so it was beyhond my control, so know i have no internet cause i screwed it up and even when verizon brings it back up ill never know WEEE!!! but anyways thats why I didn't get to evan/whoever else readfs the blog about connecting to my server because i couldnt get my wan ip for you to connect even once my internet came back up so =\, hopefully it will be back up soon and then i can test and see if evan can access it from outside my own ip. But i will have to go through the guide again because when reseting my router it killed all my port forwarding settings =( sadness, well good thing I didn't lose any server data....sigh. BTW if someone wants to make a website for the server so we can get that up and have more people actually playing that would be cool. ok ya, IT WILL LIVE I PROMISE!!!!! for all who care <3

Ok, so friday afternoon I took home one of the servers that were down in the tech room collecting dust for a project I had going on at home, well right now I have yet to figure out how to work the server so meh but whatever. What I was planning to do with this server was to have host my own private ragnarok server. This is definately a project in the making. Right now I have succesfully gotten the game up and running on my laptop, and from hosting it from there I also had my little brother connect to it. So right now people can actually connect to me and can play. Although he was under the same ip address as me so i'm not sure if people outside my home can connect to me. If anyone is interested i have most of the files needed to play EXCEPT for a properly configured sclientinfo.xml file for people not under my ip address. but that would be easy to get to anyone who would like to come and test some things for me, so if your interested just send an e-mail to me and I'll get you up and running as soon as possible ^_^

So i set my dell it 03 up so it has 2 partitions of equal size. I have installed Windows XP just fine, drivers and all but when i go to install Ubuntu on the other half it just doesn't work, it doesn't even give me an error saying that it doesn't work it just doesn't >.< so am I missing something is there something that i am missing, like a partition or something that formating or something that i am just missing? or is it even possible to duel boot with Linux and Windows? Army of Laptops (And a Tablet PC to even things out)

Since we have such a tidy little stock pile of Laptops, It'd be
interesting to try and Network them all together and force them to be
our new PXE Boot Computers over a Network with that Home server
Machine.

Because their much smaller then a Full screen and Optiplex, they would
be a lot more Space conservative rather then the current PXE boot
comps. It would also provide a great test for Home Server.
Even if they weren't PXE boots, the Laptops would be a lot better for
using in a Network rather than the Big Machines. Unless we want to
Network using Ubuntu. Because Ubuntu was created by the devil, it
doesn't run very well on the current Laptops, and its Support for the
Touch Pad, etc, is nearly non-existent. So we need XP on them.

Ubuntu Sadness

Ok so ya, Ubuntu it was interesting, it was fun, It was cool to mess with but like most new toys you slowly lose interest. It's like that christmas present you had to have but after playing with it once or twice it gets lost under the pile of crap in your closet. You thought you wanted it and you thought you would play with it forever but sadly it just gets forgotten. Over christmas break I found myself using ubuntu less and less. First of all on my gx 260 at home I have it dual boot setup but I use a wireless usb reciever for a mouse and keyboard which my computer does not recognize until an OS boots up, so on the screen where i either pick Ubuntu or Windows xp, I can't select which one without a ps2 keyboard which i couldn't find in my house. This isn't a big deal they're not expensive and there is a way to change the default selection after booting up. The thing is I'm a big gamer which ubuntu does not support. I play games all the time and all the other stuff you do on the computer I do in the background while still playing, a quick pause, click here and there in firefox and back to the game. So everything ubuntu is good for I don't do primarily. I do it just in the background. Also ubuntu is not begginer friendly. First of all people who don't game on computers are USUALLY not tech suave therefore they don't want to stray from mainstream, they want to stick with the simple known things. And even if they don't know the difference and get stuck with ubuntu it takes so much work to just get even youtube.com to work with ubuntu that no basic computer user would have the patience for. So If your a gamer or someone who just wants something to work which is MOST of computer users your going to stick with windows or mac, something user friendly. Although the open-source idea of ubuntu is a great idea and it works but I believe ubuntu is only for those people who don't want to "contribute" to bill gates, who want to "rebel" from mainstream and who have a lifetime to get all thier stuff working on a touchy OS. Although it was fun to play with and nice to experience and I did learn quite a bit this is just not for me. I loved it and all it did but it just wasn't for me. I got what I wanted from it and Congrats to anyone who can make a smooth running ubuntu machine

Home server and PXE boot

Since Home Server is supposed to Backup all the computers in it's netowrk automatically, what would it do when it encountered a dummy computer that is only used to PXE boot. If it tried turning it on, the PXE boot comp would load off the server and then the server would be backing up itself with all of its other backup's leading to a mindless spiral of destruction and then a dead server.

I also have a Dell GX260 at my house, and after I installed Windows Prof edition, and got all of the drivers installed i figure for uhh (**cough**) Educational reasons, I would install World Of Warcraft. Without a graphic card it runs alright at 800x600 res. But anything past that it lags really bad. The other thing is sometimes the graphics don't always load in time, so i found myself running thru a zone and all of the sudden just be running with nothing around me. But other than that it works just fine. I don't know about any of you, but I believe that was very educational.

Ok, so there are MANY things to love about both ubuntu and windows, windows does games extremely well....ubuntu does not, and ubuntu does everything else 10x better then windows so to make the perfect machine....a dual bootable one with about a 20%-80% ubuntu to windows hard dsik space ratio, this allows ample space for windows gaming applications, and ubuntu really doesnt need much space at all to reach its full capabilities. Now im just thankful that the gx260 loads the video gui for gparted and doesnt force a text base run hehe anyways post again once my machine is re-incarnated

Lol alrighty here, few things acomplished tonight...first off i hooked my ipod up to this machine...i will never touch itunes again and my suggestion to you would be USE AMORAK its amazing and simply and just really pretty!. Also i know how Mr. Hunt really hates limewire but I myself use it... and i was VERY excited to see that there was a .deb file for limewire all i needed was that and to download java 6 in the add/remove programs and bam its working, faster then my windows machine at that. SO!

Limewire - Easy .deb Install for individual song downloading
Bittorrent - Already installed used to download song albums/collections

A little update, the new Dell donations are basically useless without the resouce disk, i tested the instalation with one of the resource disks, and it worked fine (at least the graphics changed to normal) this was just a little update.

Dell Optiplex Gx260

We have recently recieved donations as Phrosty's post stated, and him and I were lucky enough to take one of those machines home. We got them home and i tried to boot mine up, it didin't work. There was an error that didn't state what error it was but simply says "strike F1 to retry or strike F2 to enter setup" I made sure that the boot sequence was on hard-disk, and that the hard-disk was connected to the motherboard correctly. With that information I made a prediction. That was that the police deparment said that the people who were whiping the hard-disk were going to reinstall Windows XP home :However, they did not, I was working on the computers this morning 1st period, and began installation of Windows XP Prof edition, and guess what, it worked. What a shocker XD.

Therer are two different stickers on the side of the Optiplex GX260's Green and Blue, there really isn't a way to tell the difference between the two unless you intall Windows Prof on them, Lucky for you I have completeled that already and here is what I found.

What I'm excited about with the new donations

The work was heavy, and the turnout low, but the payoff is worth it. In the past, donations have been disappointing. We can't argue much about that, because they are still FREE, and all donations are GREATLY appreciated. Yesterday around the school you could have seen Evan, Mr.Hunt, and myself disposing of the mound of garbage in the back of the cave and hauling it off. Replacing that mound of garbage is a stack of new machines, that all are supposedly in good working condition. The greatest bit was the donation from the Police Department, which included flat screen monitors, external DVD-RW drives and thirteen new machines that are impressive compared to any other machine currently in the cave. They also top the machines in the computer lab.

Its like rawr midnight or something and this is really angering
me....so I got a thumb drive and moved a picture and some music over
to this machine and for one...picasa automatically uploaded the image
to itself and it was amazing just opened it and my picture was
there....cool. the music on the other hand was epic fail. Opened up
banshee moved all the songs in there and every single one said no
codec...i attempted to find the codecs for it but got confused so i
figured i would work on the video part....i decided that vlc player
would be a nice choice and it even had an easy instalation for linux
computer. Only problem was whenever i would try to download anything
for some reason weather through the terminal process through sudo
apt....or through the add and remove programs box i kept getting this
error. " Could not resolve 'isa.coos-bay.k12.or.us" im confused and
slightly angry at the fact that coos bay school crap is on my computer
RAWR i dont know how this works but its keeping me from getting stuff
so thats all for tonight im going to bed.

We spent some time in the classroom the other day making a list of things that an Ubuntu machine (or any machine for that matter) should be able to do BEFORE it goes out the door. These are basic requirements and all agreed that if a computer can't do these basic things, it's time to start looking for another computer. It was further agreed that any machine that we send out should be configured and tested before it leaves. It is our job, not the end user to ensure that all the necessary upgrades and installs are complete.

The BIG LIST

Obviously it needs to run smoothly meaning at least a P3 processor, 500mhz or faster, everybody agreed that 512mb of ram was a requirement, 256mb is just not enough.
Connect to the Internet, either by NIC or Modem
Able to play MP3's
The software should be loaded to play a DVD weather or not a DVD drive is actually present
Banshee, itunes - user should be able to subscribe to a podcast or listen to internet radio
Picassa should be loaded allowing the user to manage digital photos
Email via a web browser, gmail is recommended, electronic calendaring can be handled by Google calendar.
Open Office Defaults should be set so that it automatically saves in .doc, .xls and .ppt formats
Software to handle instant messaging should be setup
Speakers a NIC and a printer are not optional but required hardware
A flash drive (thumb drive) is also required equipment.
The machine should be backed up and a copy of the backup should be maintained by our class.

Home Machine

4am and I just got around to playing with the machine...but so far I have gotten onto the internet, checked my e-mail, gotten to the blog and managed to install Picasa which was very simple considering google had a .deb file for it. Although oddly enough it did not show up in the add/remove programs windows where we got banshee from. Tomorrow I will attempt to get the instant messaging to work and then upload some pictures to picasa because I have yet to put any pictures on it, and if I have some more free time I will see if I can get some mp3's to play through banshee

Fedora Proxy settings (and probably Ubuntu as well)

For the past several weeks we have had a tough time getting the updates we need for both Fedora and Ubuntu. Getting through the districts proxy server has been problematic (and frustrating).

We have a special NIC that should bypass the proxy server over at the district office, for web browsing it works fine. You can get to Gmail and many other sites that you cannot get to without the special NIC, however downloading updates for the OS has not been working.

It turns out that configuring Firefox to find the proxy server settings at the district office is not enough. In addition you must configure the OS itself with the proper proxy settings. System, preferences, internet network, network proxy and so on in Fedora, it all looks good BUT IT DOESN'T WORK. You must edit the file .bash_profile in the /home/myhomedir/ folder. Then you must log out and back in again. The details are found here.

After editing this file on a Fedora box we were able update the machine with any updates or additional software we wanted (sweetness). The assumption is that the same thing will be true for the Ubuntu boxes although it hasn't actually been tested yet.

I got back into Coos Bay Saturday about 3PM. It was a long flight with 3 layovers (Nashville to Memphis to St. Paul to Portland to North Bend) whew. While in Nashville I got to see the Ryman Auditorium which is the home of the original Grand ole Opry. I also got to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I called my wife on the cell phone while I was standing in front of the award for Patsy Cline the whole thing was very moving. Not far from the Ryman is a bar called tootsies which is where Willie Nelson was playing when he got his first song writing gig (or so rumor has it). Famous early customers were Kris Kristofferson, Faron Young, Willie Nelson, Tom T. Hall, Hank Cochran, Mel Tillis, Roger Miller, Webb Pierce, Waylon Jennings, Patsy Cline and many more (or so rumor has it). Anyway a good time was had by all. Tootsies was really crowded so we couldn't get inside but the band was loud enough we didn't have to.

This is the first time I've ever been in the South, I was probably in the south when I was a very young boy but I was much to young to remember any of it. The thing I will remember about the south is (one) how country music is everything and (two) how nice the locals are. The taxi drivers are not nice but they aren't locals (they're from south Africa or some such place). Many of the hotel and airlines people aren't nice but they aren't locals either. Every person I met that was a local (you can tell the moment they speak <grin>) was just plain nice and had a kindness about them that was completely refreshing. You don't get to experience the south on a 4 day teachers conference but what little I did experience I really liked.

My boss was kind enough to let me book out of the conference about an hour early on Friday and beat feet to Augusta for a 4 hour visit with Amy (My Daughter) . It took about 7 1/2 hours to drive to the game, traffic in Atlanta was a mess. But I got to watch the game (volleyball) for a couple of hours and then visit with Amy at her apartment for a couple of hours before heading back to Nashville. Driving through the night was not fun and wasn't exactly safe. By 2:30 AM I was starting to see things that weren't there so I grabbed a quick 30 minute nap at a gas station. I had no way of knowing how long it would take me to find the airport once I hit Nashville so I pressed on. After I got to the airport an hour early I wished I had used that hour to get more sleep on the road but hind sight is always 20/20. Seeing my daughter was awesome and well worth the trouble. I slept some on the flights back but sleeping on a plane when your packed in tighter than a sardine can is not easy. Anywho, I got back to Coos Bay, talked with my wife for about an hour and crashed for about 16 hours, I feel pretty good at the moment.

Oh and all the other time I was in Nashville I was working hard at all the classes learning how to become a better teacher, at the end of the day this is all about me becoming a more effective teacher. My desire is to become much better at cramming things into your brains, learning how to present things in a way that sticks without confusing the issue and learning how to present tests and quizzes that accurately measure your understanding rather than just feeding my ego <grin>. By my way of thinking, whether or not I'm an effective teacher or not is not measured by whether or not I have a license to teach from the State of Oregon (which of course I do) but whether or not you guys are learning by my being here. In any given trimester, in any given class, we'll spend about 45 hours with each other in the classroom, your time is a terrible thing to waste as is mine, the taxpayers (your parents) are counting on us, we need to get on with it. Believe it or not the trimester is half over, there's a lot of learning to do between now and November 29th.

I'm learning a lot, but some of the classes are a bit long and dry. Not surprisingly there is a lot of talk about wiki's, blog's, myspace and youtube. I need to check out facebook. All of these would be considered Web2.0 technologies. Social Networking is the buzz word of the day. There's very little here regarding computer hardware (bummer) and tons of stuff regarding software. They refer to your generation as "digital natives" meaning that all this computer stuff has been part of your world since day one. I on the other hand am considered a "digital immigrant" they keep reminding me that when I grew up the computer as we know it hadn't been invented. hmmmm.

Late Wednesday evening we were walking back to the hotel from a restaurant, it was 9:30PM and 77 degrees. This morning it hot and raining. yuc.

We got to the North Bend airport at 5:30AM PST and finally checked into our hotel in Nashville TN at 11PM CST. We had a layover in Portland and Detroit. The plane from Portland to Detroit was packed sardine style uuugh. When we finally got to our hotel they had overbooked and had no rooms for us (we made our reservation a month ago). Sooooo we ended up at another hotel (not fun).
I am now in Nashville at the conference center and hoping all this will be worth it. Today is day 1 of a 3 day conference.
